Swisstulle

Swisstulle UK Ltd the worlds largest volume manufacturers of bobbinet are currently developing increasingly technical markets for their fabrics. What was once just a high quality embroidery fabric has been transformed into a versatile technical product. With end uses ranging from traditional wedding veils to parachute skirting and radar reflective decoys the transformation is indeed an achievement.

  • Swisstulle are the largest volume manufacturer of bobbinet in the world.
  • The unique construction of bobbinet provides maximum strength per weight.
  • Patented silver bobbinet shields up to 99.99% of Electromagnetic Radiation.
  • Bobbinet has been used for light diffusion in the film and theatre industries for over 40 years.
  • Swisstulle can produce fabrics up to 17m wide, with no seems.
  • Genuine bobbinet weave is a fabric construction in which the weft yarns loop around the vertical warp to form an exceptionally stable hexagonal mesh. The regularity of the structure ensures the creation of a unique matrix of yarn contact points, a feature which is exploited in some of their more technical fabrics.

Another unique advantage of bobbinet is that fabric can be produced up to 17m wide, this is utilised by their film and theatre range of flame retardant scrims which are used to provide seam free light diffusion and back drops. The fabrics give designers a range of light transmission levels to create depth and soften images.

One of the more recent developments has been the introduction of conductive fabrics into the range. These fabrics have been developed with silver coated nylon yarns and are available in different hole sizes and levels of conductivity. To date these fabrics have been used mainly for either their shielding properties or their radar reflective properties. However there has been interest and development work within flexible electronics products and conductive filtration.

The shielding properties have been tested by Qinetiq using the dual mode stirred chamber test method and are acknowledged to provide excellent signal and power reduction.

The company has seen great interest from the public for the shielding fabric, with growing concern over mobile phone mast emissions. Personal protection products such as their sleeping enclosures have been developed to specifically target this problem and have proven to be a great success. Now the performance has been established, Swisstulle are focusing their attentions on the industrial markets, with room shielding solutions and portable shielding enclosures being seen as potential applications.

More commercial applications for radar reflective products are also currently being considered, with developments currently in work.

The non conductive technical fabrics make use of the consistency of hole size and the added strength which the structure imparts. Typical examples of this are the nylon parachute fabrics, which have far greater bursting strength than equivalent warp knitted fabrics.
