Textiles perform a large number of roles for the military. Fabrics can be tailored to protect against extremes of heat and cold, against wind and rain, against ballistic impact, and against nuclear, biological and chemical threats. Textiles are used to provide camouflage, not only in the visible spectrum, but in the ultra-violet and infra-red wavelengths.
In addition to the clothing and equipment for the individual soldier, textiles find applications such as parachutes and tenting. There has been recent resurgence of interest in the use of inflatable structures for mobile hospitals and aircraft hangers.
