Yarns may be categorised as staple or as continuous filament. Staple yarns are composed of short fibres that are formed into a yarn by twisting or wrapping. In the case of continuous filament yarns each fibre may be thousands of metres long so little or no twist is required to maintain coherence and strength. Staple yarns offer good texture and bulk. Continuous filament yarns are stronger and stiffer.
