Fabric laminating and coating

Dartex Coatings Laminated Sailcloth

In the laminating process two or more pre-existing materials are combined using an adhesive. A fabric might be bonded to another fabric or to a continuous sheet material. Alternatively a coating, often in liquid form, might be applied applied to the fabric and then dried or cured in-situ.

Fusible interlinings incorporate both techniques where a fabric is coated with an adhesive that can be melted to laminate the interlining to a part of a garment such as a shirt collar.

Membranes are ultra thin coatings and are used to control fabric permeability without radically altering the fabric stiffness. Typical coatings include rubber, polyurethane , PTFE and polyvinyl chloride.
