In building, textiles are used in composites, as structural components and for sound and for thermal insulation. For example, glass reinforced concrete is widely used as are glass reinforced polymers for internal structures. Textile fabrics in both coated and uncoated form are being increasingly used in roofing. Textile roofs are lightweight and are able to span wide areas without pillars that might impede a spectator’s view in a stadium. Textile roofs can also be made retractable to respond to weather conditions.
Geotextiles in man-made or natural fibre form are widely used in soil stabilisation, drainage and for containment systems. Particular examples of the use of geotextiles includes the construction of dams, sea defences, roads, runways and land fill sites.
